In June 2023, the Verrazano Kiwanis Club put on its annual Cars Care Show, convening several hundred collectible and vintage automobile owners and fans on Staten Island.
The benefits from the day- more than $7,000- were awarded at a dinner in the fall and the team at CP Unlimited knew exactly how the proceeds would create a big impact.
The Agency’s Day Habilitation program at the Cora Hoffman Center is the only place in New York City where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can take advantage of M.O.V.E. (Mobility Opportunities via Education/Experience)– a transformative program helping people with disabilities take their first steps and expand personal accessibility via equipment and training.
Our Curriculum and Training Specialist, Melissa D’Accordo, who also directs the M.O.V.E. program was able to purchase a medium pacer (one of the most utilized pieces of equipment), five Compass Chairs, and two prompts for our Hygiene Toileting Systems from Rifton. Combined, the additions will mean stronger muscles and greater personal dignity for M.O.V.E. participants; the equipment will provide more daily opportunities for enjoying a walk and building endurance, a greater ability to bear weight and maintain eye contact to improve health and social skills, and more independence when using the bathroom.
The equipment will be assembled in the new year and will soon be integrated into the Staten Island program. We thank the Verrazano Kiwanis Club for their generosity, partnership, and commitment to our mission to help people with I/DD achieve fulfilling lives.
