ISS Program Promotes Independence, Honors Participants
CP Unlimited’s Independent Living Support Service program helps people with developmental and intellectual disabilities maintain the highest level of independence and involvement in their community.
The freedom to create a fulfilling life is at the center of this inspiring facet of the organization’s comprehensive canopy of supports for people with disabilities. Throughout New York City, more inclusive communities are created and sustained through the guidance from family and, in some cases, Community Habilitation professionals. Participants take part in navigating city life on their own, and enjoy vacations and social outings, work in various roles, and foster connections with neighbors and local partners.
On October 15, the Agency recognized supporters, family members, and persons supported at the annual ISS / Community Habilitation dinner at CP’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan. On hand were an array of people who each have a hand in making the program a success for more than 80 people throughout the five boroughs!
We want to thank Pascale Leone, Executive Director of Supportive Housing Network of New York for her remarks and Shari Sperling for her ongoing support of the program. Said Shari: “Whenever I go to visit [my brother in a CP setting], I am just so impressed by how loving everyone is and how well they are cared for. It’s a very special thing and I think that it’s so unique in this world to have people who actually care and want to help, and not just for a day, or a week, but throughout a person’s lifetime. So, thank you…CP Unlimited.”
Most importantly, attendees heard from program participants who talked about the new lives they are creating for themselves thanks to their personal commitment and the help of some very dedicated people from CP Unlimited. Hear from Lillian Chaparro below:
“I have been living in the Bronx for over three years now and I’m very happy to be on my own and I have CP Unlimited to back me up. I’m glad that I’m on my own because it’s making me learn how to be more responsible and learn new things. I’m getting to know my neighborhood more often… I like my neighbors that live nearby me.”
