I Like to M.O.V.E It, M.O.V.E It: Celebrating Our First Year
CP Unlimited always looks to find new opportunities to help people we support live fulfilling lives. One of the most recent additions to our range of available Day Hab support services at the Cora Hoffman Center in Staten Island is the introduction of the M.O.V.E. (Mobility Opportunities via Education/Experience) program, formally launched last year on June 16, 2021.
M.O.V.E. is an activity-based program designed to help individuals acquire the motor skills needed for sitting, standing, walking and transitioning. The program helps individuals who use a wheelchair to become more independent and self-reliant. What started as a pilot initiative with just one participant has now expanded to include 3 people supported in the MOVE program. We are in the process of evaluating 3 additional candidates. To date, CP Unlimited is the only organization offering this program in Day Hab settings in the Metro area.
A large part of our success with M.O.V.E. has been motivated by contributions from our supporters. To date, we have raised more than $38,000 to purchase necessary equipment including:
• 3 Activity Chairs
• 2 Pacers
• 1 TRAM
• Support Station
• Hygiene and Toileting system
Our community has also stepped up with donations of:
• 1 Pacer
• 2 Standers
• 1 Tricycle
Now, with more equipment and a year of experience under our belt, we look forward to growing the program to help additional people with limited mobility take full advantage of its many benefits.
“The M.O.V.E. program is a transformative force for our individuals. People are getting in the upright position, taking their very first steps, and becoming more mobile and self-reliant. It is inspiring and I am so proud to have this as part of our available services.” -Marleen Whitman, Assistant Facility Director, Cora Hoffman Center
