Cars Care Show a Wheely Excellent Experience on Staten Island
The smell of gasoline mixed with morning dew as the first collectibles rumbled into the parking lot just before dawn on Sunday. A 1953 Corvette, a mid-60’s El Camino, and a pre-WWII era Ford backed into spots on the College of Staten Island outside building 5N, for the first Cars Care Show put on by the Verrazano Kiwanis Club benefitting CP Unlimited and our work with people with I/DD on Staten Island.
By mid-morning, more than 150 additional cars would join the first set of vehicles as the local Chevy Club, Cadillac Club, Mopar devotees, auto modification groups, and enthusiasts of all types showed up and showed out.
As polish was being applied to hoods and trunks in anticipation of close inspections by car show judges, families and folks from across Staten Island took in the array of candy colored Corvettes, convertibles, one-offs, and luxo-barges of the 1980s and 1990s, as their owners stood by to tell stories and exchange restoration resources.
When it came time for judging, a diverse list of categories including “Dirtiest Vehicle” “Best Luxury Car” “Best Resto-Mod” and “CP Unlimited Choice” awaited vehicles on display. After several hours, the winners emerged and were given trophies in a fun ceremony. Congrats to the owner of the white 1972 Mercedes 480 SL convertible who earned the “CP Unlimited Choice” trophy!
Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo attended and shared remarks, while attendees enjoyed delicious grub from several food trucks, and learned more about area services, goods, and attractions.
