Advocacy in Albany: Do More for DSPs
CP Unlimited team members, persons supported, self-advocates, and family members ventured to Albany, New York for the final rally before the budget is passed to demand higher wages for Direct Support Professionals and more resources for the I/DD provider field! We returned to push for a 3.2 percent Cost-of-Living-Allowance and a $4,000 Direct Wage Enhancement for DSPs, and to remind everyone about the importance of the pending “Traveling with Dignity” Act, currently in the Senate and Assembly.
You can read about our prior visits here and here, as our work advancing awareness and ensuring more equitable wages for disability support workers and accessibility for people with disabilities have always been organizational pillars.
Perhaps the most effective and important aspects of our visits to the state capitol are the meetings and conversations with elected officials. These are prime opportunities for our advocates to discuss their needs and articulate why more funding is imperative. This trip, we were proud to meet with Staten Island Assembly Member Michael Reilly and Brooklyn Assembly Member Monique Chandler Waterman among several additional representatives.
